I'm sure it's already on the site somewhere and been discussed multiple times but I suck at searching for things.
Anyhow, Can anyone suggest tips on how to properly break in a barrel?
I've heard of a lot of options all the way from one extreme to the other. I.E.
1.) No barrel break in is needed
2.) shooting a round, clean the barrel, shoot two rounds, clean, and so on.
3.)Even rounds that are somewhat like sand paper. Start out course and get smoother. I have never actually seen these or no if the process works.
I just need someone knowledgeable to give me an easy to follow this is how you do it answer, and possibly link to a video.
Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
This sounds like quick and dirty version of lapping a barrel. This involves pouring a soft metal lap around a brush in the bore and using it with lapping compound to lap the bore. More laps are poured as they become loose. Lapping not only removes rough spots and burrs but eases tight spots in the barrel. If its a factory barrel, cut with a shit reamer that has done 150 barrels in a day. With the break in all, you are trying to do is smooth out the reamer chatter marks in the throat. You can speed it up by slugging it then lapping it out.

Location: Oregon | Ruger does not recommend a break-in you are correct (per Ruger employee). The shooter needs to do what gives them peice of mind. I did not do anything to mine and am getting great results. Best of luck to you |

Location: Central Virginia | My 'break-in' was just to lube the bolt and then shoot the rifle. I've shot just over 30-rounds of various rounds and came up with my best 3-shot group of .254' at 100-yards using Winchester 140-grain Match (I believe these use SMK bullets). At some point I'll probably clean the barrel. |

Location: South Carolina | Somebody will probably shout me down for saying this, but I think on modern firearms manufactured by top quality companies, barrel break in is largely a myth. Here is why, I recently purchased two firearms from Wilson. These are with match grade barrels. Wilson Combat says to fire 200 to 300 rounds through their new guns before the first cleaning. Why would that be? Well, manufacturing tolerances are so tight now that barrels simply don't need to be repeatedly cleaned. Following that logic, with my RPR, I found that accuracy was WAY more affected by ammunition choices than by whether I have cleaned the barrel every 50 rounds or so. Now, I don't let my guns get filthy, but have come to the conclusion that constantly cleaning them puts additional wear on the barrel that over time would do more to impair accuracy than just cleaning them to be sure they will remain serviceable. I generally clean now after every 150 or so rounds or after a full day on the range. |

But I found that my rifle does not like the Hornady 129-grain A-MAX whatsoever. It's okay with the 120-grain A-MAX but not as good as the 140s. I've only shot 60-rounds out of this rifle and did not follow any sort of break-in procedure. |

Location: Central Virginia | Here is a picture of a 400-meter group I just shot today. It was the last 3-shots of an 18-round day (12 on steel and 6 on paper). The first 3 shots I used to adjust the POI and I shot this last 3 rounds on the same scope setting. If I had not pulled shot # 4 & 6 I'm confident that this would have been a much tighter group. This was with the Winchester 140-grain Match (which supposedly uses the 140-grain Sierra Match King). I've shot just over 70-rounds through this rifle so far and it is topped off with a Nightforce 4-14x50mm SHV with an illuminated MOAR reticle. |

Location: Michigan | I just hope Ruger doesn't get sloppy with production on these trying to keep up with demand. I am willing to wait for as long as necessary to insure I get one that hasn't been hurried through production. |

Location: Nc | Another reason they want you to wait before cleaning is that the more you fire the more the barrel gets lapped. This is just a hypothesis from a couple of long range shooting books so the bullet and all the crud actually wears the barrel just enough to make it more accurate. |

Location: Nc | I was wondering if ruger has fixed the problem with the barrels from the first lots of rifles out of the factory. I just got a new second gen rifle with the billet bolt shroud and muzzle brake on the barrel. I was wondering if anyone has heard or read that the barrel problem was fixed. I'm thinking of dropping in an LRI .308. Any comments welcome |

Location: Chesapeake, VA | My only 'break in' procedure is to scrub out new rifle barrels in case there are any shavings or machining material left in to become embedded in the barrel. After that I just shoot them. Every one of my shooters are sub M.O.A. |

Location: Lynnwood, WA | I just fired mine in 6.5 Creedmore for the first time this past week. Mine has the muzzle brake, but still has the plastic bolt shroud. I ran a snake through the barrel for the first ten rounds. My hand grips don't have any alignment problem, either. With the Hornady 140 grain ELD's, I have 3 round groups all touching at 100 yards. So far, I'm very impressed with this rifle. |
